Last fall, Minneapolis hosted its first SlutWalk, a multi-city march/protest where folks are invited to put on high heels, fishnet stockings, short skirts, and other purportedly skanky evening wear for a short walk. The goal of the those marching was not to make it to a bar, but rather to bring attention to the prevalence of victim-blaming—sometimes called "slut shaming"—surrounding rape cases. The folks behind SlutWalk also rail against the lame idea that men can't control themselves when in the presence of women in sexy outfits. But in addition to the SlutWalk, people in the organization also provide support for survivors of sexual violence and community education. The group plans to raise funds this weekend for such services with SlutFreeze, a sex-positive benefit party. Performers include Smiling Lune Bellydancing and Bawdy Blue Burlesque Review, and the event will conclude with a drag show sure to put a sparkle in your eye before you hit the dance floor for some Saturday-night celebrating.
