Carl Flink is a choreographer with a mission. His Black Label Movement company features dancers who dare to do just about everything. "Visceral" is an apt description of an evening that unites intense physicality with sophisticated structuring, and powerful social messages with scientific principles set in motion. The production will feature a live performance of BLM's viral internet hit "A Modest Proposal," created with Science Magazine writer John Bohannon for the 2011 TEDx Brussels conference in Belgium. Bohannon stands on the shoulders of BLM dancers, dives into their arms, and is generally manhandled as he delivers a lecture that calls for greater collaboration between dance artists and scientists, and points some fingers at United States funding priorities and the low social value placed on dancers in our society. The YouTube version has received over 950,000 hits. Other works include a powerful exploration of impact between dancers, and a surreal view of a dance hall in the bottom of a mineshaft. The combination of Flink's edgy intelligence and the no-holds-barred momentum of his dances is irresistible. His company of skilled and fearless dancers carry out his vision impeccably.
