The Iraqi and American Reconciliation Project (IARP), which brought the powerful exhibits "The Art of Conflict" and "Navigating the Aftermath" to Minneapolis, is teaming up with Intermedia Arts in a new show featuring six prominent Iraqi women artists: Hayv Kahraman, Julie Adnan, Dena Al-Adeeb, Sama Alshaibi, and Sundus Abdul Hadi. "The exhibit presents a female perspective on the residual memory of war in a contemporary art context," says curator Tricia Khutorestsky. Her intent is to re-frame the discussion about the war in Iraq, especially as it comes to a close. All of the works are photo-based, though Khutorestsky says this wasn't a deliberate choice. However, it does say something about the way the artists present their ideas "perhaps more realistically than other art forms such as painting or sculpture might allow," she says. In the show, it is up to the viewer to find connections between the way that the artists express their ideas and emotions, which "will hopefully become clear through engagement with the work and the information revealed within the show materials," she says. The opening reception is from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, February 3. (Work by artists Sama Al Shaibi and Dena Al-Adeeb)
