Of all the ominous rhetoric reliably uttered by armchair soothsayers, none has been repeated as frequently as the grim forewarning that the United States is doomed to a cataclysmic collapse akin to that of the Roman Empire. Admittedly, this dire prophesy has achieved a disturbing weight in our age of social unrest, global warfare, and increasingly polarized culture divisions. With the looming 2012 presidential election signaling an even greater escalation of political bludgeoning, a new production of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar couldn't arrive at a more appropriate time. Amplifying the work's relevance to our modern world, this fourth collaboration between the Guthrie Theater and touring troupe the Acting Company contemporizes the play's setting, imagining the iconic power struggle in the disarrayed context and spiraling chaos of our election season. Theater's quintessential tale of ambition, ideology, leadership, and betrayal, Julius Caesar continues to fascinate with the complex psychology of otherwise rational human beings devising murderous deeds for allegedly pure intentions, and inadvertently unleashing disastrous consequences. While the Guthrie and the Acting Company have previously crafted fresh takes from familiar works of the Bard, none have derived such vexing unease for verging too close to the pervasive anxieties of the 21st century.
