"Panties and ponies," someone said to me. "That's what Frank Gaard's all about right now." Sure. Even Gaard, who has excited and incited the Twin Cities arts scene for decades (particularly during his Artpolice era), has said, "Monet had his water lilies, and I have my panties." Still, his cartoon-like thought-balloon mashups mingled with the detritus of contemporary consumer life—rendered in eyeball-searing colors—take the notion of collage beyond the realm of Duchamp by way of My Little Pony via trenchant commentary. The Walker Art Center's Gaard retrospective includes upward of 75 pieces: new pony work, the artist's tableaux paintings of famous friends and family, illustrations from Artpolice, exhibition designs, and album covers. The artist, whose vibrant fetishistic imagery is often credited to his bipolar disorder, is scheduled to speak at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 9, at the Walker about himself, his obsessions, and his art. The exhibition opens this Thursday, January 26, with a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. plus an opening reception (part of Target Free Thursday Nights) from 5 to 9 p.m. (Frank Gaard, Bust of St. Frank Smoking)
