It may be a mild winter in the Twin Cities so far, but there are still months ahead before it's shorts season again. Fortunately, the MIA has us covered. Starting this Thursday, the museum's spacious lobby will be transformed into a relaxing tropical oasis with grass, palm trees, and other South Seas amenities. Titled "Pop-Up Park," the newly (and temporarily) balmy lobby takes its name from the pop-up stores, galleries, and parks that have begun to appear in public spaces since the beginning of the recession. To kick off the three-month installment, January's Third Thursday: Urban Oasis invites visitors to bask in the glow of the improvised sun and surf. Music at the event will be provided by St. Paul electronic dance group Apollo Cobra. Guests will also find a tropical-themed photo booth hosted by Yelp Twin Cities, and signature mai—er, make that MIAtais—and other refreshments for sale. This might not be the winter staycation you had in mind, but it's not to be missed.
