More About

From the icy waters of Antarctica to the vibrant energy of a jazz club, the latest Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program (MAEP) show at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts mingles history with imagination. The dual solo exhibitions, Mark Ostapchuk's "Standards" and Chris Willcox's "90º South," feature pieces by two painters who each present a unique body of work. Chris Willcox, who teaches at Macalester College in St. Paul, has created a series inspired by the heroic age of Antarctic exploration, which took place from the late 19th century through the 1920s. Drawing from photography of explorers on their expeditions, she creates thinly painted, ghost-like re-interpretations of history. Mark Ostapchuk, an adjunct lecturer at the University of Minnesota, has created a number of abstract paintings full of colors and shapes. The show's title is taken from the jazz tradition of using a repertoire of songs, but instead of composers like Gershwin, Ostapchuk draws from abstract painters such as Guston and Matisse, as well as baroque and rococo painters like Fragonard and Watteau. The opening reception for the two shows is on Thursday, January 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. (Chris Willcox, Lost Men)
