Of Sadness and Hope: Images from the Northside Tornado

When a tornado ripped through Minneapolis's north side last May, over 200 residents were displaced. And while the state allocated $1 million for relief efforts, many homes remain in disrepair as families who were already struggling to make ends meet must now find ways to fix damages. For "Of Sadness and Hope," children and teens were invited to share their stories, and to explore the aftermath of the incident through photography. After meeting with award-winning photographer Wing Young Huie, the kids hit the streets to take shots of families, homes, and businesses affected by the storm. While some images capture the reality that economic disparity is as much of a problem as the tornado itself, there is also a strong sense of community and hope for what tomorrow may bring. The opening reception is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 12. (Ana Soto,Solitary)
