24:00:00 Xtreme Theatre Smackdown

Proving that memorable theater can, in fact, be created overnight, Theatre Unbound has assembled an intrepid coalition of 40 female playwrights, directors, and performers for one of local theater's most impressive feats: the 24:00:00 Xtreme Theatre Smackdown. Formerly known as the 24 Hour Play Project, this annual event challenges participants to create, rehearse, and present an original piece all within a single day. Each year for the past decade, this happening has further allowed Unbound to highlight the primary mission of the company, namely to demonstrate that theater need not relegate female participants to preconceived functions, storylines, or roles. In Smackdown anything goes, provided participants incorporate some specific ingredients (lines of dialogue, props, stage directions, etc.) pre-voted on through the group's website, www.theatreunbound.com. The winning elements won't be revealed until Friday evening, 24 hours before the show. That means the playwrights will have one night to conjure their work before passing the creative baton to a director and cast. After a few hours of rehearsal, the works will be offered up for public consumption. While the event has the lighthearted camaraderie of impromptu chaos, competition remains an ever looming factor, especially this year as Unbound plans to introduce surprise contests involving those onstage ... and those in the stands.
