More About

A double dose of Latin heat should be the perfect antidote for a Minnesota January night. The six members of locally based Malamanya should know. They play a fervently rootsy brand of Cuban son, the African-influenced island staple that in turn inspired myriad variations throughout the Latin world. With bandleader Tony Schreiner's upright bass igniting the simmering rhythms, Jason Marks's trumpet floating provocatively over the proceedings, and Adriana Rimpel's deliciously sultry vocals raising the temperature, it's as if everyone's been transported to Havana just off the Malecon, with the Buena Vista Social Club waiting in the wings. Alma Andina also has a folkloric approach but focuses considerably south of Cuba on music centered in the Andes, stretching to the northern Chilean origins of band leader Vladimir Garrido. Trademark Andean pan flutes surface in songs like "Desierto Florido," but the group also has pan-Latin influences. (Photo by Benjamin Carter Grimes)
