With their shimmering New Standards & Friends Holiday Show album still in heavy rotation on the Current, the New Standards will return for an encore run at the Dakota after performing a pair of successful, star-studded shows earlier this month at the Fitzgerald Theater. These year-end performances should find the band moving away from the holiday-heavy repertoire and back to their catalog of wide-ranging pop covers, with pianist Chan Poling (the Suburbs) and bassist John Munson (Trip Shakespeare, the Twilight Hours) trading vocal duties on gems like Britney Spear's "Toxic" and the Replacements' "Androgynous." The classy confines of the Dakota should make for a sophisticated alternative to the wilder New Year's Eve parties of the weekend, and the ideal complement to the New Standards' lush, inviting cover ballads.
Thursdays, Fridays, 7 p.m. Starts: Dec. 29. Continues through Dec. 30, 2011
