More About

Before ringing in the New Year, come salute the highlights of 2011 with Salon Saloon. The show, which is a bit like a dive-bar version of Minnesota Public Radio's Wits series, invites artists, musicians, storytellers, and other quirky characters onstage for some uninhibited chit-chat. The self-proclaimed "live-action arts magazine" is put on monthly at the Bryant-Lake Bowl by arts and culture nonprofit Works Progress. This installment, referred to as The Heavy 100, invites back favorite personalities such as storyteller and author Rob Callahan, poet Dobby Gibson, painter Brian Frink, and photographer and performer Adrianne Mathiowetz. Each will add their 10 to 12 selections to the countdown. While most Salon Saloons are structured around one theme, "the year-end shows are always very loose and very silly," says host Andy Sturdevant. Although he won't reveal which direction the conversation will veer, he did confess that the evening will feature pop music from 2011. This year's celebration will also include grasshopper cocktails, which have become the official drink of The Heavy 100. "We made a big mess last year with the ice cream melting onstage," he says. "We can only get away with it at the end of the year." (Andy Sturdevant and Salon Saloon band member Claire Tiller photographed by Crystal Liepa)
