Mary Jo Pehl, Trace Beaulieu

Twenty-two years after its premiere, Mystery Science Theatre 3000 is still going strong. While the program has been off the air for more than a decade, regular DVD releases have slowly brought the original shows into the digital age. The original creators have split into two groups—Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax—both continuing the art of movie riffing, while branching out into other media as well. This Wednesday, Mary Jo Pehl and Trace Beaulieu will showcase the spoils of their writing with an event at the Wilde Roast Cafe's Parlor Room. Beaulieu, the original Crow and Dr. Clayton Forrester on MST3K, published Silly Rhymes for Belligerent Children last year. The book contains creepy, gross, and all-out funny poems about bad-acting kids who mostly come to unfortunate ends. It also features delightful illustrations by Len Peralta, whose projects include the delightful Geek a Week trading cards. Pehl, who came onboard as a writer and as Pearl Forrester in the later years of MST3K, recently saw her latest project, Employee of the Month, published. The book includes essays and stories drawn from Pehl's experiences across the United States, and also includes illustrations from Peralta. Both Pehl and Beaulieu will read from their respective works and take questions during the event. (Trace Beaulieu photographed by Kathryn Beaulieu)
