More About

Want to pretend to be part of the Victorian era before returning safely to the present? This holiday season you have the opportunity to do just that. The Alexander Ramsey House was designed by Monroe Sheire, an architect who crafted homes for elite St. Paul families, most of whom are now long gone. The house was donated to the Minnesota Historical Society—along with family letters, photos, and the original furnishings—by Laura and Anita Ramsey, two sisters who never married. At these special events, you'll be able to step into their world during an hour-long tour of the house featuring five different guides, all in period costume. "They get to play parlor games and open presents. So they're not just taking a tour; they're experiencing a Victorian Christmas," says site manager Cindy Olsen. Folks are especially in character in the kitchen, as the Ramseys had many servants. They will be making cookies with one of Mrs. Anna Ramsey's recipes in the wood-burning stove. The house is closed Christmas Day. (Image courtesy of the Minnesota Historical Society)
Wednesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Sundays, 12-3 p.m. Starts: Dec. 1. Continues through Jan. 1, 2011
