While many Nutcracker productions lay on the sparkle, romance, and whimsy pretty thick, the dark and violent essence of the original E.T.A. Hoffman fairytale still lurks just below the surface. John Munger, artistic director of Third Rabbit Dance, will explore the grittier aspects of this story by shifting perspective. For this one-man show Munger plays Drosselmeyer, Clara's supposedly benevolent (and yet always mysterious) uncle. In this version he's a lonely drunk, armed with some vodka and dolls in his dark apartment. As he creates stories that play off of his madness, he winds through familiar Nutcracker scenes and melodies. Munger is no stranger to the material himself; he has danced in over 200 Nutcracker performances, taking on various roles throughout his prolific career. However, tonight's Nutbuster!! is sure to give the classic story a sharper spin.
