More About

This Thursday, Friends of the Hennepin County Library will wrap up its series spotlighting local presses with Milkweed Editions' Christopher Merrill. The author will be reading from and discussing his newest book, The Tree of the Doves: Ceremony, Expedition, War. His latest work is in three sections, each an extended essay on the title subject: ceremony, expedition, and war. Merrill uses his various travel experiences to explore each theme through a historical perspective, including his witnessing of a banned Malaysian ritual while in the province of Kelatan, a comparison of modern-day China to the journey of Saint John Perse from Beijing to Ulan Bator in 1921, and, finally, a voyage through the Levant in 2007 in relation to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Merrill also has four collections of poems to his name, along with four nonfiction books. He is currently the director of the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa. Milkweed publisher and CEO Daniel Slager will give an introduction, and MPR's Marianne Combs will moderate. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. with book sales and wine.
Thu., Dec. 8, 7 p.m., 2011
