More About

This week, the Loft Literary Center and Mizna will continue their innovative series, Equilibrium, by featuring two rising stars in the spoken-word world: Remi Kanazi and Jamaica Heolimelekalania Osorio. Associate Program Director Bao Phi says he wanted to encourage dialogue about race and indigenous issues, displacement, and empire by pairing Kanazi, an outspoken Palestinian American poet and activist, with Osorio, an indigenous artist. "I've seen stellar clips of Jamaica on YouTube about retaining Hawaiian language," Phi says, "and so I thought it'd be great for the two of them to share a stage and see what happens." Also performing on Saturday will be R. Vincent Moniz Jr., a local Native American poet who blends humor with social commentary, and Chaun Webster, a local African American poet who has faced discrimination because of his outspoken activism and religion. "So they're all connected, I believe, in spirit—if not directly," Phi says.
Sat., Dec. 3, 8 p.m., 2011
