More About

This holiday weekend marks the 100th year for the Minnesota Orchestra's illustrious Young People's Concert Series. It was introduced by Emil Oberhoffer, founding music director, on November 24, 1911. To celebrate its centennial, the orchestra will be presenting a children's play only slightly older than the series itself. Engelbert Humperdinck adapted the Grimms' fairytale to opera in 1893, and 30 years later it became the first-ever to be broadcast in its entirety, thanks to the BBC. The story is the same one all children know: Two siblings (portrayed in the show by sisters Christina Baldwin and Jennifer Baldwin Peden) get lost in the woods and become easy prey for a crooked witch with a taste for flesh. Yet despite the story's familiarity, Humperdinck's dynamic opera delights the senses in ways that the Brothers Grimm as writers probably hadn't considered. Joining forces are Joseph Stanley on set design, Marcus Dilliard on lighting, and Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater. Hansel and Gretel is a whimsical way to kick off the holiday season, and the show is appropriate for all ages. Music is sung in English with projected supertitles. $20-$70. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday. (Photo by Greg Helgeson)
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sun., Nov. 27, 2 p.m. Starts: Nov. 25. Continues through Nov. 26, 2011
