Anthony Gonzalez (the lone musician behind M83) is cursed with being both meticulous and ambitious. While his sound is huge in both sentiment and structure, it's produced at the micro level as Gonzalez dials in every synth squiggle until it fits just so. Every song feels like he's building high-tech skyscrapers using only a pair of tweezers, so it's all the more impressive that he's managed to deliver a double album (the new Hurry Up, We're Dreaming) that's cohesive—as if he's composed an entire city full of bright lights and twinkling crystal. While Gonzalez can occasionally quiet down as a frontman, M83 as a project seems to continually seek new extremes. With Active Child. 18+.
