Throughout its history, Mixed Blood Theater has worked to include all audiences, not just in the house but onstage. Over the past decade, founder Jack Reuler and the company have expanded that to include people with disabilities in its annual shows and tours. This year, it will take that effort a step further with a three-play festival of works that examines these issues from a myriad of perspectives. Each show runs in rep during the two-week series. It opens November 11 with Gruesome Playground Injuries, a regional premiere by Pulitzer-nominated playwright Rajiv Joseph. That will be followed the same night by My Secret Language of Wishes, written by Cori Thomas and directed by Tony nominee Marion McClinton. The final show, On the Spectrum, opens November 12. The world premiere by Ken LaZebnik was commissioned by Mixed Blood, and will be directed by Reuler. The works take on disability in different ways. For example, Gruesome Playground Injuries will be presented by deaf actors in American Sign Language, while On the Spectrum looks at conditions like autism and asks if it is a disability or not. The entire festival will also be presented under Mixed Blood's new Radical Hospitality model, in which seats to all performances will be available free on a first-come, first-served basis (tickets may be reserved online for $15).
