It's been less than a year since All My Relations Gallery, the bright yellow building on Franklin at 14th, opened as the new home for All My Relations Arts, a program now under the umbrella of the Native American Community Development Institute (NACDI). The gallery is part of its long-range plan to rebrand Franklin Avenue as the American Indian Cultural Corridor. As talented and often cutting-edge artists have shown work there, the space has become a hotspot for some terrific talents such as Bobby Wilson, Frank Big Bear, and Emily Johnson. This month, the gallery is the starting point for the traveling exhibit "Mni Sota: Reflections of Time and Place," which features artists engaging in a dialogue between traditional and contemporary practices. Francis Yellow explains that "tradition" is a Western concept, so the images he creates are not symbolic or representational, but about a way of life. Yellow is one of 17 artists—including Gwen Westerman, Bobby Wilson, and Greg Bellanger—who will be showing work that both embraces traditional practices and emerges on new contemporary ground. After the show's run in Minneapolis, the exhibition will travel to various parts of Minnesota, including the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and the Tweed Museum in Duluth. It will then return to Minneapolis in February at the Katherine E. Nash Gallery. The opening reception is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 4. (Todd Bordeaux, Reservation Diabetes Dispensers)
