Merce Cunningham is gone and the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, now on its "Farewell Legacy Tour," will perform its final Minneapolis engagement this weekend. But the Walker Art Center, with whom the iconic choreographer and his merry band of collaborators enjoyed long and fruitful relationships, is celebrating Cunningham's enduring influence on art with the 10-day celebration "The Next Stage: Merce Cunningham and the Walker Art Center." On Thursday, "Dance Works I: Merce Cunningham/Robert Rauschenberg" opens, the first in a series of exhibitions drawn from the Walker's acquisition of 150 costumes, props, and set pieces created for the company. This one features Rauschenberg's set pieces, including enormous, painted stage curtains and large-scale, combine-like sculptures. On Friday and Saturday, the company performs modern-dance classics "Antic Meet" (with sets and props by Rauschenberg), "RainForest" (Andy Warhol), and "Pond Way" (Roy Lichtenstein), with music by such luminary composers as John Cage, David Tudor, and Brian Eno.
