By their own pretzel logic, They Might Be Giants hail from Brooklyn. But the longtime duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell are fanatic dodgers of convention, pitching knuckleball pop tunes that flutter and dart with brilliant absurdity, striking out reality with clever turns of phrase and musical hooks deadlier than Koufax's curve. The two Johns have been twisting the irk in quirk for 25 years, treading a whimsical realm where stream of consciousness met dadaism somewhere in Oz. The Giants' new Join Us is full of strange delights that ricochet all over the musical map, from perpetual pop-folk permutations to the odd punk dash, doo-wop, and rock that purposely undermines its own anthemic delusions. Meanwhile they all cling to weird narratives that touch on stuff like the cartography of daydreams, a spaceman with "a bathroom in his pants," a prattling headless horseman, and disconcerting time travel. Opening will be Gold Motel, a Chicago band led by erstwhile Hush Sound singer Greta Morgan who conjure a radiant, power-poppish sound on their engaging debut, Summer House. 14+. $23. 6:30 p.m. 701 First Ave. N., Minneapolis; 612.338.8388. —Rick Mason
