Beginning with his literary debut, 1990's The Buffalo Tree, Adam Rapp has consistently captured the awkward posturing and restless anxieties of adolescence in a string of young-adult novels. While Rapp has since expanded his authorial range to encompass the stage and screen, empathy for the tribulations of youth remains a telltale signature of his work. In fact, the troubled transition to adulthood resides at the core of Rapp's The Edge of Our Bodies, a coming-of-age play that follows 16-year-old Bernadette on a locomotive traveling from Connecticut to New York City, where she intends to make a life-altering revelation to her boyfriend. Unexpected encounters en route, however, stand to detour Bernadette from the planned course of her resolve. The Guthrie's debut of the work, staged in the intimate Dowling Studio, underscores Rapp's theme of adulthood's onset with the casting of Ali Rose Dachis. A Twin Cities native, Dachis grew up performing on area stages before graduating from the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program and making a striking impression with last year's production of Circle Mirror Transformation. With Dachis now living in NYC, The Edge of Our Bodies represents a homecoming of sorts, reuniting the performer with her Circle Mirror Transformation director Benjamin McGovern.
