Jerome Bel: Cedric Andrieux

The 10-day celebration of the late, great choreographer and all-around experimental genius Merce Cunningham kicks off with a performance-cum-memoir by former Cunningham and Lyon Opera Ballet dancer Cédric Andrieux. Shaped by the choreographer/theatrical provocateur Jérôme Bel, the evening weaves strands of Andrieux's dancing life with spoken text and dance excerpts from Cunningham and other legendary choreographers. Bel's biographical exploration of the inner dancer proved fascinating in his 2005 duet "Pichet Klunchun & myself," with Bel and the Thai traditional dancer Pichet Klunchun discoursing on their very different artistic practices. His foray into Cunningham territory promises to be equally riveting. The Walker Art Center deserves kudos for bringing Bel back for the third time.
