More About

Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet Seamus Heaney tackles Sophocles' Antigone in this distinct adaptation, a centerpiece in the Guthrie's fall lineup. The poet keeps the familiar setting and story but brings, if not a modern backdrop, then an awareness of current political events, which, millennia later, aren't that far from what the ancient Greek playwright explored. The local production merges music with the play's action, featuring compositions by J.D. Steele and vocals from Robert Robinson. Sun Mee Chomet (a veteran actor and playwright and a City Pages Artist of the Year in 2008) plays Antigone, whose desire to give her brother a proper burial brings her into direct conflict with the state, which has deemed him a traitor. Marcela Lorca, whose numerous credits include the Guthrie's terrific 2009 Caroline, or Change, directs. The company also includes a bevy of talented veterans, including Lee Mark Nelson, Richard Ooms, and T. Mychael Rambo in the chorus, Regina Marie Williams as Eurydice, Stephen Yoakam as Creon, and Ansa Akyea as the Messenger. (Image by Michael Brosilow)
Tuesdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: Sept. 24. Continues through Nov. 6, 2011
