The savage, beating, primal heart of humanity is on the menu in Peter Sinn Nachtrieb's play, which opens the 28th season for Red Eye Theater. In the piece, a pair of couples gathers to celebrate their joint wedding anniversaries, but the action quickly descends into a modern hell, as deeply held issues come to the surface. This isn't just an exercise in angst, however. Red Eye artistic director Steve Busa, who is also the director of the production, notes that the show is savagely funny and full of material to offend everyone. Playwright Nachtrieb certainly has collected accolades for his work, with Hunter Gatherers earning in 2007 the American Theatre Critics Association/Steinberg New Play Award, and the Will Glickman Award, which honors the best play to have premiered in the San Francisco Bay Area the previous year. The local cast includes Bethany Ford, Dan Hopman, Kevin McLaughlin, and Jen Scott. The crew includes fight choreographer Brian Hesser, so expect some onstage fireworks. (Photo by Liz Josheff)
