Historically speaking, Oktoberfest is a celebration of the marriage between Crown Prince Ludwig of Germany and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. That reception must have been one heck of a party, because the raging has continued year after year for the past two centuries, surviving bouts of cholera, terrible weather, and an expansion to America. The two-week-long Oktoberfest, which is similar to St. Patrick's Day, invites any and all people to make merry, regardless of their ancestral ties. All one needs is a love for brats and beer, and at least a little enthusiasm for polka. One way to celebrate your love for Germany's cultural bounty is to attend the Twin Cities Oktoberfest this weekend at the State Fairgrounds. The event is two full days of food, Summit Oktoberfest ale, a wide array of bar games, dances, and musical instruments with names that make you sound drunk when said aloud. Live bands will accompany the affair, with traditional music by the Bavarian Musikmeisters, the Jolly Huntsmen, S.G. Edelweiss, and a contemporary, "plugged in" take on polka by the Squires Band.
