It's not uncommon for a standup comedian who is just starting out to feel some anxiety when performing the first few times. What if there are hecklers? What if you forget your jokes? Or worse, what if no one laughs? Comedian Rocky Laporte had no such fears entering the business. "I was actually driving a delivery truck and I got held up. I got shot," he says. After his recovery, a coworker suggested he try standup. "What's the worst that could happen? The crowds can't be that hostile," he figured. It was quite a logical move, as LaPorte was always cracking wise on the job. "I used to go on the [truck] radio and goof around like, 'Hey, I got good news and bad news. I ran over a pair of gym shoes, but the bad news is someone was in them.'" Of course, his sense of humor was almost his undoing. "When I got shot my boss thought I was kidding," he says. "When I called on the radio for help, they thought I was goofing around." After his first open mic, he knew what he should be doing. "It was like a revelation, honestly," he recalls. "I never thought, 'Hey, you could do comedy and make a living.' That's how dense I was." That, of course, is something a lot of comedians say. "What?" asks LaPorte with a chuckle. "That I'm dense?" 18+; 21+ later shows.
