When the young people talk about "emo," they are likely referring to a style of rock music, not one of the greatest joke-writing comedians of our time. "It's so weird, making a name famous, and then seeing it get swiped by a music genre," laments Emo Philips from his home in California. "Oh, well. My dad, Bebop Philips, suffered the same fate." As if having Emo back in the Twin Cities weren't enough of a treat, here comes the icing: "My special guest will be comedian Frank Conniff (MST3K, Cinematic Titanic)," he says. "Frank and I have been performing sketches together in Hollywood every month since February. This is the first time we will be performing them 'on the road,' as Cormac McCarthy might say." In addition to sketches, both Philips and Conniff will be doing their regular standup sets. "These shows will be absolutely unmissable—if I am reading my contract correctly," he adds. Fans familiar with Philips's sense of humor might reckon that they could get a heaping of his jokes via Twitter, but that's not the case. He does have an account, but tweets only occasionally. "I rarely tweet," he explains, "because if something is funny enough to tweet, I will save it for my act, and if it isn't funny enough to get a laugh in my act, then why would I tweet it? Having said that, I will every now and then just to 'prime the pump,' so to speak. I tweet one of my jokes much like an ancient every now and then would sacrifice one of his children." 18+.
