This weekend, Off-Leash Area launches the second year of its garage tour, seeking to provide quality artistic programming to suburban communities that have less access to the arts. They will kick off their series of performances in Brooklyn Park, presenting A Gift for Planet BX63. The show, which premiered in 2007, is inspired by The Little Prince and The Gods Must Be Crazy, and follows the story of a girl living on a faraway planet. It's a visually beautiful piece, aided by a text of charming rhyming couplets by Max Sparber and movement by Off-Leash Area's co-artistic director, Jennifer Ilse, who also plays the little girl. Off-Leash's other co-artistic director, Paul Herwig, who designed the set, says the company decided to do a garage tour to expand their audience, and to reach suburban people who might only come to the cities to see pieces at the Fringe Festival, the Guthrie, or the Children's Theatre. "People in town are more willing to risk something," says Herwig. You can check out the group's website (offleasharea.org) for a full list of tour stops, which includes performances in Stillwater, Ham Lake, Eagan, Bloomington, and Lakeville, as well as Minneapolis, before the launch of their new show, The Picnic, at their own garage this fall.
