More About

Tonight, Friends of the Hennepin Country Library debuts its new series, Spotlight on Local Presses, featuring Coffee House Press, Graywolf Press, and Milkweed Editions. First up is Coffee House with an evening of spoken word from Bao Phi and Ed Bok Lee, who have both recently released poetry collections. Lee brings us Whorled, an inquisitive, powerful, global exploration of identity, thrumming with insight and taut phrasing. The poet won the 2006 PEN Open Book Award, and was also an Asian American Literary Award finalist that same year. Lee currently teaches at Metropolitan State University. Phi's collection, Sông I Sing, is an honest and raw dialogue about race against an urban backdrop. His poems pulsate off the page with solid rhythm and his passionate, activist voice. Phi has claimed the Minnesota Grand Slam championship twice, and was a finalist in the National Poetry Slam. He performs at and organizes events locally and nationally, including the award-winning Equilibrium series. Spoken-word artist Shá Cage will emcee, with music by DJ Nak. Sat., Sept. 24, 8 p.m., 2011
