More About

As we search for lost things, what new discoveries do we make along the way? You may find yourself asking this at Stevens Square Center for the Arts' latest exhibition, "Lost/Found," a show featuring works from two artists who approach their interpretations of time, place, and personal experience with different, but complementary, results. In Japheth Storlie's "Recollections of a Paradise Lost" series, the artist searches for childhood memories and emotions through photographing buildings and landscapes from his hometown in Iowa. Many of his images feature detritus strewn about in front of decaying structures. Yet these shots do not trigger feelings of bleakness and despair, perhaps because there are also details of bright color and bold sunlight. These spaces may be abandoned, but they are not forgotten. And, most importantly, they are still standing. Mixed-media artist Rachel Rolseth uses charcoal, paint, and ink to create her pieces, exploring the beginnings and ends of journeys using imagery of crows and other birds. The opening reception is from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday, August 27, and features music by Wes Morden, Peter Fleming of the Middle States, and Larry Sahagian. (Japheth Storlie, Porter's Birdhouses)
