More About

Yarn bombing is a vibrant street art, created from knitted and crocheted fabric rather than aerosol cans. A cozier form of graffiti, it's also non-permanent. And while it's still technically illegal, occurrences go mostly unprosecuted. Local guerrilla knitting group the Swatch Team has been invited to the Walker as part of its ongoing Open Field project. Crafty types wanting to contribute to the upcoming yarn storm can meet up on Thursdays through September 1. The group differs from most "knittas" (an affectionate name for those who practice yarn bombing) because they don't pursue grand visual impact by wrapping bikes or telephone poles with yarn hugs. Instead, they prefer to leave useable, wearable items around the cities. "To me a yarn bombing isn't a bombing without an element of surprise," says Christina Elias of the Swatch Team. She has decided to capture the radical politics behind graffiti by creating a clothesline of 1,050 feet of winter wear stretching from the museum to Loring Park. Currently they have three laundry baskets full of knitted items; their final goal is 21. (Photo by LollyKnit)
Thursdays, 5-8 p.m. Starts: Aug. 18. Continues through Sept. 1, 2011
