This weekend folks have a chance to witness and participate in one of the most beautiful events in the state: the Lantern Lighting Festival. Hosted by Como Park, this perennial August favorite takes cherished traditions from Japanese summer festivals and infuses them into a multicultural event that celebrates the Japanese community here and around the world. Catch amazing entertainment, including the traditional Bon Odori folk dance fused with Minnesotan vibes in a performance featuring the exceptional Mu Performing Arts troupe. Take part in cultural demonstrations and activities like calligraphy and the actual lighting of the paper lanterns, and feast on Japanese cuisine. Japan deserves to be celebrated this year more than ever after the recent devastation felt from this spring's earthquakes and tsunamis. The festival's theme, Kizuna – Standing with Japan, is in tune with this sentiment. Sponsored by the Japan America Society of Minnesota, Como Park, and the St. Paul-Nagasaki Sister City Committee, this family-friendly event promises to bring a little bit of the East into the heart of the Midwest.
