The Twin Cities' comic community runs deep—as well it should. For example, MCAD remains one of a few colleges offering a curriculum specifically for comic artists (they don't even try to pretty it up as "sequential art"), and the Cartoonist Conspiracy, a national organization, is most active in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Various local artists have been taken on by notable publishers, and the coalition makes appearances at several festivals each year. But it's less often that Minnesota comic artists get together to show their work without the stress of tables crowded with books and price cards. Enter Altered Esthetics, a gallery in northeast Minneapolis that regularly hosts exhibitions featuring comic art. Its latest, "Just Add Ink: A Comic Cookbook," is co-sponsored by Big Time Attic and the Cartoonist Conspiracy, and opens this Friday. "When you see the original artwork on the walls, mistakes, tiny pencil marks, and little bits of personality really come through. For comic artists and non-comic artists, it's extremely valuable and inspiring," says Kevin Cannon, artist and committee member for the project. The pieces on display have also been collected into a comic-based cookbook highlighting work by 45 artists from Minnesota and elsewhere. The opening reception is from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, August 5. There will also be an artists' discussion panel 1 p.m. Saturday, August 20. (Art by Kevin Cannon)
