"An object is never a mere thing, an eraser is never just an eraser," the Soap Factory states on its website of its current gallery show, "The Erasers." This Saturday, the exhibit is also a spoken-word event. The reception has been coordinated by Talking Image Connection, a local organization that puts writers in touch with artists and gallery spaces to add extra dimensions to each other's work. The evening, titled "Erasers and Other Memories," brings pieces from international artists into the creative view of local writers, including Lightsey Darst, John Jodzio, and Katie Hae Leo. Their task is to create a work that uses the exhibition as a starting point, and to perform it in the gallery space. The art from the show, curated by Corinna Kirsch, is inspired by French author Alain Robbe-Grillet's novel of the same name. In the book, a detective becomes hyper-focused on the search for an eraser, an object that he is not even certain exists. The spoken-word and performative component will likely take this notion one step further. (Jesse Durost, Flag)
