Ten Second Film Festival

If you're planning on heading over to the St. Anthony Main area to watch the fireworks on the Fourth of July, you would do well to stop by the Soap Factory for the seventh-annual 10 Second Film Festival, a party exhibiting blink-and-you'll-miss it movies that include high art and lo-fi technology. It's a quirky idea that draws on the shortening attention span of the YouTube generation, and the festival has become a Minneapolis holiday tradition as it celebrates brevity in artistic excellence. The event is co-hosted by MPLS.TV with emcee actor/comedian Tom Reed. Judges Barb Abney, Andy Sturdevant, and Carolyn Swiszcz will help choose winners from categories such as waterworks, let's just be friends..., animal behavior, how high are you right now!?!, and drive-by. Doors open at 8 p.m., when DJ Jam E-Z will be spinning. After the fireworks (around 10:30 p.m.), about 100 films will be shown. There were 300 submissions this year, and participants include award-winning filmmaker Catherine Campion, who is organizing a 100-plus person underwear bike ride that will travel to the Soap Factory prior to the festival. Mon., July 4, 8 p.m.-midnight, 2011
