As the Trylon microcinema approaches its two-year anniversary, local film aficionados have reason to celebrate. Operated by Take-Up Productions, the 50-seat screening room has thrived on an imaginatively conceived slate of repertory cinema, offering retrospectives varied enough to include the swashbuckling action of classic pirate tales, the riveting suspense of Alfred Hitchcock thrillers, and the disarmingly dry wit of Bill Murray comedies. The theater's latest series, microseries at the microcinema, pushes the cinematic eclecticism by featuring a selection of themed films diverse enough to span the documentaries of Errol Morris (July 1-3: Fast, Cheap & Out of Control and The Fog of War), the observational humor of Robert Altman (July 8-10: California Split and Buffalo Bill and the Indians, plus a special July 7 screening of M*A*S*H at the Heights Theater), the giallo-tinted horrors of Dario Argento (July 15-17: Suspiria and Deep Red), landmark silent films from Harold Lloyd (July 22-24: Safety Last and Speedy), and a study of urban vagrancy in the 1950s (July 29-31: On the Bowery paired with the Minneapolis-set short Skid Row). Trylon might be amongst the smallest theaters in town, but clearly its programming knows no bounds. (Pictured: On the Bowery)
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: July 1. Continues through July 31, 2011
