Queertopia: A Cabaret Celebration of Queer Love

Among the highlights of Minneapolis's Pride festivities is Queertopia: A Cabaret Celebration of Queer Love. The annual showcase has been a Pride mainstay since 2006, when the event was founded by Outward Spiral Theatre Company, Eleanor Savage, and Intermedia Arts. For the past few years it has taken place at Bedlam, with Outward Spiral's Jeffry Lusiak curating. This year, the cabaret will be at Intermedia with Bedlam co-hosting, and promises to be a delicious evening of comedy, drag, performance art, dance, theater, and video. Look for Harry Waters Jr. performing "a.k.a. father/son," about how intersections of lives allow the queer version of family to work now and in the future. Waters draws from stories his father told him, and the piece's music was created in collaboration with his student DJ ReedRichards, who is like a son to him, along with spoken-word artist Kaoz. Theresa Madeus will be doing a solo drag piece that she presented in an earlier form this winter at 9x22 Dance/Lab. She says the drag/dance hybrid "involves an ice cream cone and some wigs." SuperGroup is also doing a contemporary drag performance that Jeffrey Wells describes as "post-third-wave." Another highlight will be a comedic piece by Molly Van Avery, Tom Lloyd, and Maren Ward about their vision of a queertopia, which features dancing, head rubbing, and an international ban of beige. Other artists include Andrea Jenkins, Arturo Miles, Kelley Meister, Sweet LillyBee, and Rachel Nelson. (Sweet Lilly Bee)
