Over and Under

Using everyday materials, including thread, cotton, copper, and even pendulant switches from a willow tree, three artists are re-crafting the concept of fiber art in this show sponsored by the College of Visual Arts. Mary Giles's sculptural pieces are the most arresting, as she plies her materials into forms at once recognizable and otherworldly: a prickly geode cracked open and revealing a molten center, or vase-like volcanoes whose copper-shingled exteriors emanate heat. In contrast, Nancy MacKenzie's ethereal willow-and-thread compositions float in space, and Kelly Marshall's hand-woven textiles combine beauty with functionality. (Mary Giles)
