With the passage of the so-called Surly Bill, Surly Brewing Company can now get officially started on its proposed $20 million expansion to develop a "destination brewery," consisting of a restaurant, beer garden, and event center that sells its own brew. On Saturday, Surley personnel will take a break from the lawyers, bankers, and developers to celebrate their success in updating the post-Prohibition Minnesota statute that stood in the way. "Surly Nation: We overcame a challenge together and changed a 78-year-old law. Now let's party!" owner Omar Ansari proclaims. The open house will reward supporters with food, music, and, of course, the beer that has made the company so popular. Pink Mink, Gay Witch Abortion, and Nightosaur will play in the parking lot rain or shine, with the interior building open as well. Sure, the expansion will create over 150 new jobs, but the most noteworthy element has been the grassroots momentum surrounding the political debate. The Surly Nation proudly and vocally attended public meetings, defending the local brewer's right to expand operations and playing a major role as the law—originally created to regulate the division between producers, distributors, and retailers—has been updated to address modern concerns.
