Absentee Landlord

It takes a special talent to be able to turn trash into art. Filmmaker, author, and artist John Waters has this skill in spades. Over the years Waters has produced brightly colored cinematic train wrecks filled with morbidly obese drag queens, animal feces, and heavy doses of camp. Yet his work has also explored weighty topics including segregation, classicism, and the Hollywood machine. His casts have featured rising stars and pop-culture personalities, from Johnny Depp to Ricki Lake to Patty Hearst to Mink Stole. Waters himself will be in town to talk about his illustriously tacky career for This Filthy World, which has been described as a lecture-cum-vaudeville-cum-retrospective performance of sorts. The following day marks the opening of "Absentee Landlord," an exhibit in which Waters will rearrange, reintroduce, and wreak havoc on pieces from the permanent collection (while adding a few works of his own). Expect unusual juxtapositions, a little rule breaking, and gleefully questionable taste.
