French playwright Yasmina Reza caused a stir with her earlier caustic comedy Art, which delved deep into the world of modern art and the very nature of creativity and appreciation. She takes on the veneer of civilization itself in God of Carnage, which takes a simple conversation about a playground fight and magnifies it into a 75-minute four-way battle. The one-act, single-scene play centers on a pair of couples—Alan and Annette, and Michael and Veronica—who meet to discuss a fight between their sons. That schoolboy spat seems simple compared to the fireworks that ensue among the quartet, leaving no relationship unscathed. The play is also wickedly funny, which helped earn it a 2009 Tony Award. Guthrie associate artistic director John Miller-Stephany directs, with a quartet of local theater veterans—Jennifer Blagen, Chris Carlson, Tracey Maloney, and Bill McCallum—taking on the roles.
