Donald Glover

Donald Glover is best known as the dimly affable jock Troy Barnes on NBC's cult hit sitcom Community, but it's only a matter of time before he's known for a lot more. Glover was still a student working as an R.A. in a dorm at New York University when, largely on the strength of writing and performing sketches with his group Derrick Comedy, he was hired by Tina Fey to write for her new show, 30 Rock. He left that New York-based series after two years to move to L.A. and pursue standup, and shortly thereafter he nabbed his Community role. All the while Glover was mixing beats and writing rhymes for his hip-hop endeavor, Childish Gambino. Quite literally, it's no joke; Glover's work under the Gambino moniker might be occasionally tinged with humor, but it's straightforward, personal rap running a gamut of styles, as evidenced on his debut album, Culdesac. At Glover's show at the Varsity, part of his cross-country I Am Donald tour, expect nearly everything but Troy Barnes: It's a one-man mixed-media tour de force of rough-edged standup, hip hop, and video sketch.
