CURIO: A Michael Thomsen Retrospective

While you're checking out Art-A-Whirl this weekend, make sure you stop by Rogue Buddha Gallery for a celebration of the 20-year career of self-taught artist Michael Thomsen, known for his carnivalesque sculptural wall-hangings made of found objects. "CURIO: A Michael Thomsen Retrospective" will feature highlights of Thomsen's work from the past in addition to debuting several new pieces. The artist's surreal collages layer objects in a woven narrative both dreamlike and grotesque. Pieces include a half-angel, half-monster with plastic innards revealed to be complete with clock gears. It stands tall as a shrine to the toy soldiers down below. In another sculpture, ornate decorations, skulls, clowns, and butterflies are pieced together in eerie and nostalgic phantasms. The grandson of an auctioneer on one side of the family; a clockmaker, painter, and violinmaker on the other side; and the great nephew of a man who ran a carnival that traveled up and down the coast of California in the 1970s, Thomsen reveals his unique upbringing through the weird and whimsical narratives in his work.
