Pen Pals Series: Dave Eggers

As the final lecturer of the season in the popular Pen Pals Series, Dave Eggers follows a distinguished list of writers who have participated recently, including Lorna Landvik, Bill Bryson, Ann Patchett, and Mark Doty. But the upcoming talk by Eggers is exceptional for two reasons. First, it is during the last lecture that the next season's lineup is announced. Given the series' history of bringing together some of the hottest literary figures, we're guessing next year's schedule will be nothing to sneeze at. Secondly, Eggers's appearance is notable because, well, he's Dave Eggers. With a number of renowned titles under his belt including You Shall Know Our Velocity (an Independent Book Award winner), What Is the What (a chronicle of a Sudanese civil war survivor), and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (a Pulitzer finalist), Eggers is also a well-known screenwriter, editor, publisher, and philanthropist, having founded the wildly popular independent publishing house McSweeney's, as well as the nonprofit writing center for youth 826 Valencia. It's hard not to envy a writer this prolific, and it seems most people who do not hate him want to be him. In fact, the two sentiments are hardly mutually exclusive.
