The New York-based Nicholas Leichter Dance tailors its version of The Whiz to each city in which the dance-theater-musical extravaganza is performed. The Whiz: Beantown was customized for Boston, naturally. The Whiz: Moneyapolis is our designated version, in homage to the Purple One whose lyrics coined the word. Starting loosely with the Diana Ross/Michael Jackson movie-musical vehicle The Wiz, itself loosely based on The Wizard of Oz, Leichter's version is set to a commissioned score by club artist Monstah Black, and is a glam fest of sequins, glitter, and platform shoes; drag, funk, and hip hop; and psychedelic, rainbow-infused spectacle that may cause the Intermedia Arts theater to implode. Still not enough? Special local guests will include Cee Cee Russell, Kenna-Camara Cottman, Leah Nelson, Mad King Thomas, and the Real Hauswives of Hennepin County, among others. Arrive early as Bedlam Theater's Club OZ offers preshow socializing, and stay late as Shannon Blowtorch DJs after hours. For tickets, call 612.624.2345 or visit northrop.umn.edu.
