More About

It's the sixth season for the Mill City Farmers' Market, founded by Brenda Langton, Spoonriver's long-revered chef. To kick it off this time around, the market will celebrate moms, have live farm animals on hand, and provide a Cajun soundtrack to the festivities, courtesy of the St. Paul-based New Riverside Ramblers. Gale Woods Farm will bring baby chicks and adorable lambs for the kiddos to pet, while grownups can enjoy a first crack at some fab seasonal produce like arugula, rhubarb, radishes, spring mix, and pea shoots, plus early flowers and plenty of bedding plants. Those looking to fête their mothers can visit chef Heather Hartman at Mill City Cooks for a special Breakfast for MOM prepared by her and her daughter, Josephine. There's also a seedling planting activity, three featured Art Market participants displaying their wares, and free reusable grocery bags, not to mention a cadre of new vendors who are bringing bison, Wisconsin grain, and bicycle-powered smoothies (Foxy Falafel) to the Chicago Mall between the Guthrie Theater and Spoonriver. All the local, sustainable fun goes down from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the open sidewalk and in the historic Mill City Museum train shed. (Photo by Mette Neilsen)
Saturdays, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Starts: May 7. Continues through Oct. 15, 2011
