Lewis Black has made a career of artfully losing his shit. His red-faced, spittle-flecked, and highly articulate comedy is a furious fusion of the indignant Howard Beale, the wry Lenny Bruce, and the apoplectic Winnebago salesman of YouTube lore. Black actually began his career as a dramatist, writing and producing plays in New York City (and working with future luminaries like Aaron Sorkin and Alan Ball), but by the late '80s his side gig as a solo performer became his professional focus. He honed his act on the road for a full decade before he got his big break as an irate news commentator on The Daily Show, which helped define the show as much as the show helped define him. That platform established Black as one of America's premier satirists, and he's since amassed a formidable body of work: a slew of award-winning standup specials and comedy albums, a trio of bestselling books, and several feature film roles. He even hosts his own annual comedy cruise aboard an ocean liner, which features fellow standups Kathleen Madigan and Greg Proops, among others. We can only assume the ship is powered by Black's righteous fury. His pair of shows this week at the State will be taped for an upcoming special, In God We Rust. (Photo by Clay Patrick McBride)
